CAMP OVERVIEW:
The “Own the Zone” Coaches Clinic is a one-of-kind opportunity for coaches of all levels to get the best, up-to-date coaching advice from the absolute best coaches in the business – current MLB coaches. Our lead and main instructors have the responsibility for millions of dollars of talent at the major league level, and also decades of experience teaching young pitchers and catchers (just like on your team).

Each coach will have the opportunity to ask questions specific to their situation. Our staff is here to help you improve your team and your coaching abilities.

STAFF:
Derek Johnson – Pitching Coach, Cincinnati Reds
Derek Johnson completed his first season as pitching coach of the Reds in 2019. He helped the pitching staff improve from the 24th place in the Majors in 2018 to eight best in 2019.

Previously in the same position with the Brewers (and despite not having what would be considered a “true ace”) they went to the National League Championship Series in 2018. Mil’s cumulative team ERA of 3.94 ERA over the 2016-2018 seasons was the fourth-best in the National League in that span and eighth-best in the Major Leagues. In 2018, Brewers pitchers established franchise records for strikeouts in a season (1,428) and lowest opponents’ batting average (.233). In his first professional coaching position, Johnson was the minor league pitching coordinator for the Chicago Cubs for three seasons from 2013-2015,

From 2002-12, Johnson was the pitching coach at Vanderbilt University and had 13 of his pitchers reach the Major Leagues — including David Price and Sonny Gray. He was National Pitching Coach of the Year in 2004 and National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010. In 2011 he helped lead Vanderbilt to its first College World Series appearance, guiding a staff that featured 8 pitchers who were selected in Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft. During his time at Vanderbilt, he helped develop six first round/supplemental first round draft picks.

Nathan Irving – Catching Instructor / Bullpen Catcher, Cincinnati Reds
FRCms, FRAs – Certified Movement Specialist & Mobility Specialist, Movement Assessment Specialist

As a double major at the University, Nate also garnered All-ACC Academic honors each year at UVa.

As a professional, Nate played in both the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates minor league organizations, before spending time in both the Can-Am and Atlantic Independent Leagues. Upon stepping away from playing Nate returned to UVa where he served as a Graduate Assistant Coach before being hired by the Reds.
